How do you take your coffee?

Cream? Sugar? Reusable coffee cup?

I’ve been miffed more than once by the thoughtless way a barista (or baristo … is that the term for a male cafe worker?) hands over a double non-fat triple shot no whip mocha latte.

Not so much by her technique, but by her lack of questioning. Whatever happened to “Is this for here or to go?”

Because if it’s for here, why not take your brew in big cozy mug? You’ll be saving a cup and one of those cardboard hand-scalding protector thingys from the landfill. AND, often times the person behind the counter will warm up the mug with hot water and THEN put coffee in the cup.

But maybe that leisurely lifestyle doesn’t apply to you. There’s no time to sit and read in a coffee shop; your boss expects you at work pronto! Why not consider investing in a reusable mug? There are bazillions of sweet designs and you’ll be helping to save the world. PLUS, your mug will make you more distinctive, likely upping your coffee-drinker prestige to one of those special individuals addressed by the barista by name.

How to host a clothing swap party

Clothing swap preparation

Got stuff? Want stuff? Have a swap!

Hey! It’s a guest post from Melanie M. Sidwell!

I like new clothes (but hate shopping). I also like free things (who doesn’t?). I’m a working parent flying solo these days with little time, patience, and funds to hit the mall, so when I was introduced to the idea of a clothing swap, I was immediately on board.

Why? A clothing swap puts into action “Another (wo)man’s trash is another (wo)man’s treasure,” truly making this living green lifestyle thingy very fashionable.

We’ve all been there, staring at the closet overloaded with clothes but have nothing to wear. A swap brings together your friends and their unwanted, misguided fashion choices for scoring free new-to-you finds, as well as a chance to socialize and do social good.

I’ve been to a few swaps, both held amongst friends in their homes and open to the public events; recently I hosted one at my home with ladies I love. Here are some tips to get you swapping: Read more

Treehugger smackdown: Washington City Paper calls ‘em out on cans

We just posted about canned beer, so this is fun:

Mama's Little Yella Pils

… author Lloyd Alter takes a wrong step when he writes:

“Nobody a mile north or south of the American border touches the stuff in cans, it just doesn’t taste as good.”

This is wrong. Cans now hold some of the best beers in the world, or at least some of my favorites. And unlike 75 years ago, beer cans today are made with a water-based internal coating that keeps the aluminum from ever touching liquid, so if your beer tastes like tin foil, it’s probably just a crappy beer.

Damn skippy! Tasty canned beer, we salute you!

Hop on over to the blog in question to let ‘em know about your favorite protected-from-the-evil-day-star beer.

Treehugger’s point, though, is totally valid: we’re just not very good at using refillable containers here.
