Every year, the Ski Area Citizens’ Coalition released their Ski Area Environmental Scorecard, which is based on whether the resorts impact roadless areas and old growth forests; purchase renewable energy or burn biodiesel; and perform energy-efficiency upgrades.

Here’s a look at the best and the worst from the 2008-09 season:

The best:

  2. Buttermilk Mountain, Colorado
  3. Sundance, Utah
  4. Park City, Utah
  5. Squaw Valley, California
  6. Alpine Meadows, California
  7. Aspen Highland, Colorado
  8. Bogus Basin, Idaho
  9. Mount Bachelor, Oregon
  10. Telluride, Colorado

The worst:

  1. Copper Mountain, Colorado
  2. Sun Valley, Idaho
  3. Breckenridge, Colorado
  4. Mt. Spokane, Washington
  5. Arizona Snowbowl, Arizona
  6. 49 Degrees North, Washington
  7. White Pass, Washington
  8. Brundage Mountain, Idaho
  9. Crystal Mountain, Washington
  10. Brian Head, Utah
