Seniors going green in Boulder

Two recent pieces in the Camera cover local senior citizens with the desire to learn how to reduce their environmental impact, addressing issues like frugality and possible physical limitations on green action.

One focuses on a group — RSVP, though that name may change soon — that will help seniors with tasks like changing lightbulbs in their homes:

At 62 and having had knee surgery, the task of dragging a stool out onto the porch and changing the light bulb two, three or four times a year had become unappealing to Gruber.

A couple years ago, she picked up a compact fluorescent light bulb (CLF) at an energy fair and installed that into the porch light.

“It’s great because I’ve not had to change that light bulb since,” Gruber said.

Last month, Gruber decided to change the light bulbs inside her home to CFLs, too. She did it with the help of a new program sponsored by RSVP of Boulder County and Longs Peak Energy Conservation. The Energy Kit Program provides energy-saving items to seniors and adults with disabilities in the county.

Check out RSVP’s Web site at www.rsvpboulder.org or give them a call. Their Boulder number is 303-443-1933. Their Longmont number is 303-772-2262.

The other recent Camera story focuses on things that seniors can do for themselves, responding to a reader question about saving money while going green:

Q: I’m a Boulder County senior dealing with less retirement income than I expected. What are some ways that I as an environmentalist can be frugal and still make green choices and maintain a good quality of life?

If we all did the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves.
