“The Cove” used brains, brawn and tech from Boulder

If the “Cove” team is like “Ocean’s 11,” Boulder supplied the George Clooney and Seth Green characters.

All of a sudden, “The Cove” has people paying attention to  it — it was moving on digg today, it’s at HuffPost Green, people are talking about it on Twitter — s0 excuse us if we puff ourselves up a bit for being home city to director Louie Psihoyos and to some of the equipment that made the movie possible:

The team went to great lengths to capture footage of the cove, employing stealth tactics such as camouflage, thermal cameras and unmanned aerial drones. Psihoyos’ pirates included experienced free divers, ex-military personnel, adventure photographers, scientists and a technician who designed hidden cameras disguised as rocks that were hidden throughout the cove to capture footage of the dolphin slaughter.

These six stealth cameras were designed by Wyndham Hannaway of Boulder’s GW Hannaway and Associates, which has worked in imaging and multimedia for more than 30 years. Hannaway, the film’s technical advisor, says his relationship with Psihoyos began three years ago, “when Louie said he was trying to save the dolphins.”
