Sex, cupcakes and the planet: 6 green reading suggestions from the Boulder Book Store
Hey! It’s a guest post from Mandy King of the Boulder Book Store!
Happy Earth Day, Boulder! If you’re a booklover like me, you tend to associate every holiday and major event with books. With that in mind, here are my top picks for books to celebrate Earth Day.
1. Eaarth by Bill McKibben. No, that’s not a typo. The two A’s in the title of McKibben’s latest manifesto refer to his belief that our planet is changing beyond recognition. Twenty years ago, McKibben was one of the first people to talk about global warming. Raise your hand (umm…or comment below) if you read his game-changing book, The End of Nature. I think we can all agree that we’ve done damage—in some cases, irreparable—to our planet and Eaarth provides a meaningful discussion about how we can turn to our communities to survive. Intrigued? Bill’s going to be speaking at First United Methodist Church this coming Tuesday.
2. Ecotourists Save the World edited by the National Wildlife Federation. Ecotourism is a hot topic these days, and I love this book because it features awesome “vacations” all over the world. There are over 300 featured, from planting sustainable crops in a Columbian rain forest to swimming with dolphins off the coast of Greece. Feel like staying close to home? There are two free programs in Colorado.
3. A Friend of the Earth by T.C. Boyle. This list wouldn’t be complete without a little dystopian fiction. T.C. Boyle takes us to the year 2025. His protagonist, Tyrone, used to be a passionate environmentalist and now finds himself in a world torn apart by global warming (most animals are extinct). Definite Eek! factor but great writing.
4. Eco-Sex by Stefanie Iris Weiss. Aptly subtitled Go Green Between the Sheets and Make Your Love Life Sustainable, this little book promises to “inspire both sexual and ecological excitement.” I laughed when I first heard
about the book, but in a city that prides itself on being green and where The Guide to Getting It On continues to be a bestseller, I’m thinking that this little book would make a great Earth Day present for your special someone.
5. Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World by Isa Chandra Moskowitz & Terry Hope Romero. I recently read a report by the University of Chicago that becoming vegan does more to help our planet than owning a hybrid car. When I became vegan a couple of months ago, I scoured our cooking section for great cookbooks. My sweet tooth led me to this delicious little. The authors also wrote Veganomicon, my new go-to guide for making tasty, impressive vegan meals.
6. Colorado Organic by Jennifer Olson. I think this is a must-have book for every day of the year, not just Earth Day. Jennifer’s book takes us through every season and provides recipes for cooking seasonally and with local ingredients. I drool just looking at the photographs in this book.
Are any of these books on your bookshelf? What books would you recommend for Earth Day?
